Setting Up by: David Blackman Configuring X X Windows is the name for a system developed in the 1980s to be able to provide Graphical User Interfaces. It provides the ability to draw graphics on the screen, but not to manage those windows. That functionality is provided by a window manager. X is also really cool in how it allows clients to connect to an X server and run X applications remotely, but that's beyond the scope of this article.
